Tip: When heat treating lead / arsenic alloy's, the colder the water the faster your bullets will harden. A block of ice in the water to chill it while the bullets are in the oven will bring your bullets to full hardness in 24 - 28 hours. Room temperature water will take 48 to 72 hours to fully harden the alloy.20-1 is a fine hunting bullet alloy, tough enough to take some velocity, soft enough to expand. 16-1 (lyman2) is as hard as any lead bullet needs to be. If I need more velocity than those will allow I prefer to move on to jacketed bullets. We make affordable, consistent quality, hard cast lead bullets for reloading both pistols and rifles used in shooting events and competition matches. Chapter 8.5 Hunting With Cast Bullets - Cast Bullets For ... Hitting the target 4 inches high at 60 yards, we can hope to be on the paper at 100 yards. By 150 yards, the same 100 yard zeroed bullet hits 14.49 inches low, and at 200 yards 41.17 inches low, with less than the recommended 800 fps of energy recommended for harvesting deer-sized game. Missouri Bullet Company bullets are “Hardness-Optimized” for your intended application. Every box of bullets displays the BHN (Brinell Hardness Number), which is constantly sampled and monitored. Specially created alloys determine the bullet hardness which varies based on the intended caliber and application. If your bullets fit your gun and the alloy is matched to the pressure of your load, you won't get any leading except in rare circumstances. Very few applications call for an alloy harder than about 15 on the Brinell hardness scale. Many commercial cast bullets run 21-24; Linotype has a nominal hardness of 22. Jul 22, 2010 · A hunting bullet needs to be accurate, an accurate bullet needs to obturate and seal the bore. A too-hard bullet could be inaccurate and may even lead more. A softer bullet that expands transfers more energy than a similar "hard cast" one at a similar velocity one that doesn't expand and blows on thru. Knowing what brands and bullet models are available in non-lead before going to your local store is always a good idea. » Bullets are widely available and we have found 293 cartridges loaded with non-lead bullets made by custom loaders. » Lastly, email [email protected] and use our experience to help you find the cartridge for you.
Sep 11, 2009 · I keep things pretty simple. Wheel weights can be found anyplace that sells tires and are perhaps the most available and inexpensive material for bullet casting. They rank 9-13 on the Brinell scale and about six on the Saeco hardness tester. That’s hard enough to work for most cast pistol bullets and for low-velocity rifle bullets. Nov 04, 2018 · The bullets allowed to air-cool reached a final hardness averaging 11.8BHN. When loading magnum ammunition I generally aim for 18BHN or higher, so that should give you some insight into just how soft these air-cooled bullets are. By contrast, the water-quenched variety reached an average of 22.7BHN– a massive increase of more than 100%. Aug 25, 2009 · I am not set up to cast myself at this time so I must buy my cast bullets so I want to know what hardness I need to look for. I will appreciate any and all information. Oh the cartridges in question are 45 Colt, 38-55, 45-70, and 30 WCF. My .45-70 bullets have been poured of alloys as soft as pure lead with a Brinell hardness number (BHN) of about 5 to straight Linotype (BHN 22). Early on I scrounged hundreds of pounds of wheelweights and added just a bit of tin so that the molten alloy perfectly filled every curve and crease inside the mould. Heat-treating can further increase this hardness. Freshly cast wheel weight (ww) is 8 BHN, aged at room temp. after two weeks it becomes 12 to 13 BHN, and ww composition varies only a little. Apr 25, 2003 · Cast bullets for a handgun should be moderately hard to reduce leading in the bore and that requires a mixture of lead, tin and antimony. Lyman reloading manuals specify a great #2 alloy that is great for cast pistol bullets. I use wheelweights and they already contain a suitable mixture of lead, tin and antimony and make great bullets. There are two schools of thought about hardness of cast bullets for deer hunting. The first is to keep the bullets fairly soft and hope they might mash out a little. If they don't good shot placement and good bullet design will do the trick. The second is to cast them of something hard and brittle like linotype with a hollow point.
Jan 11, 2019 · The laws regarding cast bullets may vary; however they are legal for big game hunting in Washington state and I know hunters that regularly use Oregon Trail cast bullets for deer and elk. the bullets are an alloy of four metals so they differ from the standard lead/tin homecast bullets. by John Robinson. Bullet casting Bullet casting, like reloading, is not necessary complicated and does not need a lot of expensive equipment. However, badly cast bullets will significantly affect accuracy and there are a number of fundamental rules that have to be observed by those wanting to cast target-grade pistol projectiles. Mar 29, 2015 · JWF, I cast and shoot 224's and 245's very hard (BH-25-28). Never had a great deal of luck with 95 and higher grain cast bullets in 243, but my rifles love 85 grainers, either Lyman or Saeco with can red lube at .245. I shoot much softer cast in cals of 7MM and above. Steel, of course, can't be moulded into bullets. Zinc CAN be melted, but it's much too hard for bullets. The melting temp for zinc is high enough that it won't melt at lead melting temps. An easier "test" is to try cutting the weight with wirecutters. If you can't cut it, don't put it in your crucible. You can't even "dent" zinc or steel weights. Any cast bullets chosen should be used to make up several dummy rounds to cycle through the action and chamber. However, even if the bullet meets all of the necessary criteria for feeding and chambering it still may not shoot well. Two things to consider are bullet hardness and whether or not it has a gas check.
